NaNo 2022

*brushes the dust off this page*

Hello? Ah! Hello again! Just a quick post to say that your friendly neighborhood Fluff is doing the NaNo thing again this year. I kept staring at the computer, planning, and staring at the scree, thinking about planning, thinking about starting, and planning in my head until a little bit ago when I finally got 71 words typed. But that's 71 more words than I had before.

The short summary:

The Accidental Summon is the story of Gavin Foster, whose reluctantly permitted trip to band camp looked like it was going to be cancelled on account of the plane he was on crashing. But a few universes over that-a-way a group of heroes succeeded in preventing a villain from summoning something nasty into the world. Only for the damaged and not totally complete summoning ritual to reach out across realities and grab a bite out of an airplane. Fortunately for Gavin it was the plane he was on and right around his seat. Now he just has to survive being in a completely different world, among a group of strangers who would really like to get moving to friendlier lands before anyone asks why they were there or what was happening.

comments

NaNoWriMo Part the Second: Not just an RPG setting book

In my previous post I said on of my NaNo plans is working on an RPG setting book. In addition to that I do plan to work on some prose. Specifically I want to continue what I am refering to as the Magic School Doofuses (Quick and Dirty, Piece of Cake, Just Purr-fect, and Consequences, note the last two involve an involuntary physical transformation and students (+staff) not being nice).

As a bit of last minute #PrepTober/#NanoPrep I'm throwing the door open to any questions for the cast of the stories to help me get back in their heads.

comments

NaNoWriMo part the first: Not a novel

This November rather than trying to put 50K into one project I've decided to do a couple of things. One of them is getting words in on an RPG setting. For the final result I'm aiming for something like the old staple bound floppy paper books from the 70/80s or similar sometimes perfect bound books from the early 2000s indie/small press RPG boom. Mostly print, two columns of text on an 8.5x11" page, in the 64-128 page range (aiming for the low end but well see). Inspired some by GURPS worldbooks in that it will be mostly description of the setting with only a small fraction of the space given over to anything system specific (for which I'm leaning towards FATE since it's a fairly descriptive system).

For the setting... I'm reaching back to two entries I made for the second 30 Days of Flashfic: Day 6 Write a Pitch For a Final Fantasy Styled RPG and the second half of Day 11 Movie Trailer Style. That setting being the Magical Girl Apocalypse, an alternate Earth which was invaded by magic wielding youngsters from a fantasy world. Aerth was in it's own version of the 50s (or maybe early 60s) when portals opened up and the invaders came through. Their parents had completed taking over the fantasy world and were starting to worry about potentially ambitious heirs who might not want to wait to sit on the thrones, so what better solution than to send them out to conquer somewhere else, preferably far enough away to not trouble their parents.

What I'm looking at currently as an outline would be:

* Introduction
* * History of Aerth
* Aerth Before the Invasion
* * The Invasion
* * After the Invasion
* The Magical Girls
* * Who Are They?
* * * Are They All Girls?
* * * What Do They Want? / Are They Evil?
* * Factions
* Post Invasion Aerth
* * Factions of The Resistance
* * Life After the Portals
* * Magic & Technology
* Major Figures & Places
* Creatures of Fantasy
* The Other World

And probably some random tables for generating stuff because random tables are fun.

Think I'm missing anything? Comments? Suggestions? "Hey where have you been?!" pokes (Mastodon mostly) all welcome.

comments

Fic: Cody's Dream

Title: Cody's Dream
Fandom/'verse: Addergoole
Notes: Starts early in Year 9 of the Addergoole School, some bits may be confusing if you haven't read anything else in the setting. (In addition to Addergoole/Fae Apocalypse being aldersprig's creation, so too is Yolanda. Lemon and Hylakaros come by way of rix_scaedu.
Summary: The event that sets about changing Cody from passive geek girl (as seen in How to Trap A Cody, set despite the title after Cody's being magically bound as an older student's servant for the year) to the girl in the maybe-canon Family Ties who was described as 'scary girl' by an Agency trained cat person, "She was all covered in blood you know. Most of it probably wasn't even hers." Cody shows up at a few points in aldersprig's Addergoole: Year 9
Warnings: Set in Addergoole, a high school for unusual students with practices much of the pre-and-post apocalypse world would object to (about the only way to be expelled is to kill another student). In particular in this story: two fights and a teenage pregnancy.
Words: roughly 3500

So this is what a lucid dream is like. Cody was surprised that she didn't wake from that thought or the surprise that came along with it. Everything felt real. Full of the little details that separated dreams from reality. The peeling anti-corrosion paint on the metal struts of the bridge she stood upon. The stray dogs in the vacant lot in the distance on the other side of the river. The faint smell of smoke from the fires started by the battle in the distance.

Fire? Fighting? How am I so calm? As if that thought threw a switch she could hear a soft whispering in her own voice even if her dream self's lips didn't seem to be moving.( Click here to continue )

comments

Fic: Consequences (Followup to Just Purrfect)

Title: Consequences (followup to Just Perrfect)
Fandom/'verse: Magic School Doofuses, my current title for the stories of Jamsa and Nicolai at a school of magic.
Summary: Jamsa and Mandry head out to the Halloween Ball
Note: Follows after Quick and Dirty, Piece of Cake, and Just Purrfect.
Warnings: Use of a leash and shackles and a decided lack of mercy or sympathy from Jamsa's fellow classmates or the faculty for his being transformed into a catgirl.
Words: 2603

Mandry knew her cosplay was not perfect. The costume was simple enough. A black dress, a red ribbon tied into a large bow atop her head, and a simple straw broom. That with a little work and she was Kiki the witch from Kiki's Delivery Service.

"Haha, good joke, now let me go."

If only she had a proper Jiji to be her familiar. ( Click here to continue... )

comments

Fic: Just Perrfect

Title: Just Perrfect
Fandom/'verse: Magic School Doofuses, my current title for the stories of Jamsa and Nicolai at a school of magic.
Summary: Jamsa asks a favor of his roommate Nicolai
Note: Follows after Quick and Dirty and Piece of Cake. Title spelling is intentional
Warnings: Violation of consent/trust. Jamsa's a jerk (then again Nicolai as well) (I think they might well both be Slytherins if at Hogwarts)
Words: 1146

"No."

"Why not?"

"Why should I? Every time I have helped you this semester you've criticized me. Not one word of thanks.
Thimble-Flash: Add Insult to Injury

Title: (untitled)
Fandom/'verse: Original fantasy
Summary: The revolution may have ended while Gregory was still a young child, that doesn't mean it's stopped causing trouble.
Prompter: aldersprig's Thimbleful Thursday Prompt for 11 September 2014, Add Insult to Injury
Triggers/Warnings: Don't see any
Note: Mostly unedited.
Words: 330 (Just squeaked in at the top of the 270-330 word goal)

Resting in the shade of an evergreen tree Gregory looked on the residence hall that would be his home for the next few years. While catching his breath a breeze washed over him and ruffled his short summer fur taking the edge off the summer's heat. Not that he was complaining. His parents always said Laufeld's don't complain, they get to work. Thoughts of getting a bed all to himself once more helped as well.( Continues under the cut... )

comments

Thimble-Flash: Oil and Water

Title: Like Oil and Water
Fandom/'verse: Original fantasy
Summary: A solution found in the remains of a meal
Prompter: aldersprig's Thimbleful Thursday Prompt for 28 August 2014, Oil and Water
Triggers/Warnings: None spotted
Note: Mostly unedited.
Words: 217 (within the 180-220 word goal)

The emperor glanced towards the windows and realized the sun had set. Hours of discussion with his advisors and they had yet to come up with a solution to the southern frontier.

"No!" Thankfully General Lethain's fist silenced the speaker by pounding upon table rather than face. "Why can you not keep this in your head? It does not matter if they have equal claims on the valley, the Eshelti and Albelti Clans are oil and water. It will not work!"

"Then keep them separate, perhaps if we rule that each receives one side of the valley?"

"Take two of the clans with the hottest tempers in the empire and set them facing each other with a river and fields to fight over? Within a year they will be fighting each other instead of guarding the frontier."

The emperor's eyes found their way to the remains of their meal. Standing he took a crystal bottle from it's silver tray and set it upon the conference table.

"You speak of oil and water but let me remind you neither do oil and vinegar mix. And yet this dressing has not broken because of the egg yolk. The Eshelti and Albelti must agree on a third clan to join them or lose their claim. And all must settle together."

comments

She had been reporting to class on time and listened to instruction. Miss Mika's performance in the recent gymnastics unit was impressive and I would be pleased to see her in next term's gymnastics class. You may wish to discuss the possibility of an Academy gymnastics scholarship as I believe she could earn one if she continues to put in the same effort shown recently in General Physical Education.

I am less confident about her desire to enroll in introductory swordsmanship. ( click to continue reading... )

comments

Next steps

Whew, so that was seven characters in roughly seven days. I'm going to take a week off from that but the week after... I'll either do another seven characters in seven days or perhaps seven posts fleshing out a setting. I might also come back and revise these characters and the setting. But not now.

This next week my big goal is writing more of The Unquiet Past, by Terinu fanfic which has been a long time idle. There won't be public posts of that for a while as I decided to hold off on posting again until it's complete (other than someone who will be getting to see the in progress pieces).

I've had thoughts of writing up a RP setting I'd tinkered with back in the 90s and early 00s which for lack of a better name showing up yet I've called Island Police. Take a dash of old, old memories of Hawaii 5-O (the original show), sprinkle on some anime influences, a bit of the Aria and Ironclaw RPGs. The setting is a cluster of islands covering a decent amount of space. Sadly all my old notes are gone, having either been in my head, on papers lost in moving, or on un-backed up drives. If I start rebuilding it I'll make certain there are backups.

comments

Thanks Royce, or Dragons on the Mind

I'm going to blame jeriendhal for the seed of a thought that lead to this opening...

Mika had worried when her mom's boss said he'd handle parent-teacher night. She could picture the fury on her mom's face if any of the things she feared would be mentioned came to her through him. But the way everyone made room as he entered made it hard to worry about any of them. The crowd of parents, teachers, and kids parted before him with hushed whispers of, "The Dragon!"

Before they were halfway through the room the vice-principal was trying to lead her away with a hand on her shoulder, "Now Mika, don't be bothering him I'm sure he's busy."

"No." That was all it took to make him stop mid-step. The school's most feared disciplinarian actually shaking.

"Sir! If she's given you any trouble."

"Then I will inform her mother when she returns.
G&A Prompt Call: All According To Plan

Title: All According to Plan
Fandom/'verse: Tales of the Mascot
Rating/Warnings: Should be safe for all
Summary: Kyle and his band of heroes in training put a sneaky plan into play...

Perched on Lydia's shoulder Kyle watched as Tamitha and Rodrick carefully guided the unconscious guards' bodies to the ground then dragged them into the nearby bushes. Slowly the moved forward into the isolated camp. He was glad to see that all stayed on their toes. It seemed his warnings about the Dread God Murphy and the That's Why He's Called The Enemy tenet had taken hold.
( Click here to continue... )

comments

Title: They Think What?!
Fandom/'verse: Original
Summary: Invasion never seem to go as planned, even when the enemy is caught completely by surprise...
Word Count: 1034
Prompter: aldersprig

It was a valuable world. A mostly intact ecosystem by Imperium standards, plenty of land to divide up, and according to the seers no magic worth speaking of. Battle Sorcerer Shethkane looked over his troops with an eager tooth filled grin.

"The seers have located one of their major cities. We move as soon as the gates stabilize. The fools have built it ripe for the plucking. No city walls, no interior walls, and the only troops to be seen are few in number and carry neither swords nor identifiable wands or staves." ( Click here to continue... )

comments

Surrender: A scene fragment

Title: Surrender
Fandom/'verse: Fantasy
Rating/Warnings: Should be safe for any non-allergic to elves
Summary: Not really a full scene, but this fragment is what I've got.

Trelander kept a neutral face while the human king across the table debated the treaty with his advisor. He suspected Dylan knew he could hear everything they said, still it would be rude to be obvious about it.

"You cannot truly mean to sign it now? We have only had but a single chance to read it. We should bring in one of the surviving scholars.
30 Days R2/S2 - Day 16 write a scene that takes place at the end of a long road trip

New user icon! Even he could tell they were already pushing them harder than they should. The poor animals were panting with a harsh wheezing that was painful to listen too and foaming at the mouth in a way he had always thought writers had made up. Rising higher on Lydia's shoulders he could finally make out the top of the walls over the next rise. "Yes! He was thankful that at least they were breaking a trail through the deepening snow. Even more thankful that the one who had his rope didn't yank on it like Chipped Tooth had. It was getting to be late in the evening when they finally stopped at a stone building that looked new and unweathered.
Journey, part one

Title: Journey, part one (for lack of a better title)
Setting: sci-fantasy alien invasion?
Content warnings: Slavery, rather blatantly implied past abuse (but none on page).
Summary: Oskar's happier after the invasion than he was before. But if there's one constant in life, it's change...

From an idea that came to mind while in that half-awake half-asleep state in which so many ideas are gained and lost.

( Story below the cut. If not for the other students, well some of them anyway, it would almost be paradise. Such as whichever of the jerks had just grabbed the collar of his shirt and pulled him away from the door to his math class. Oh come on! Not this class, I can already tell that I don't want Reid's attention!

"I hear you providing tutoring, that little guy? Well then, be a good tutor and give me your homework."

( Click here to read more.
