Day 13 – Prompt: Underwater

Hmm, could use a re-write or three and I'm actually rather meh on the idea. But it's after midnight so I'll post what I've got.

A scene from a techno-triller spy novel with science fiction elements...

After what felt like an eternity the world snapped back into focus. I could feel that the guard behind me was taking longer to recover allowing me a moment of freedom. One moment was all I needed. My first blow knocked the pistol from his hand. A fist to his solar plexus bent him over leaving him open to a sharp blow where head and neck met, dropping him to the floor. As I reached for the fallen pistol I heard a slow clapping behind me.

"A fine, but pointless performance Mister Densom."

"You know I had to try Professor." It appeared the guard who I dropped had been the only one slow to recover. The rest all had their guns aimed at me. Well, when all else fails stroke the villains ego. "But I fear I don't understand your plan. This is but one submarine and we prevented you from loading any of the nukes. How can you possibly plan to change the world as you claimed."

The Professor smiled and turned to the rest of the bridge. "Report please, Mister Noinim."

"Chronometrics reports that we have arrived on target. Navigation reports that we are only twenty kilometers East of our intended landing point. Well within allowed variances."

Turning back to me the Professor smiled again. "Very well Mister Densom, the disorientation you felt was due to my activating the very much operational Hawking-Kaku Device. We are now located approximately one hundred kilometers north Midway Island, the date is the 30th of November 1941. The ships of Operation Ai, Admiral Yamamoto's Pearl Harbor attack fleet, are well within the range of this submarine's weapons."

"You're going to stop the attack on Pearl Harbor?"

"Exactly Mister Densom. A plan which does not require those nuclear weapons you mentioned before. They were never anything but a diversion. I will use a scalpel not a sledgehammer. This assault submarine carries over one hundred cruise missiles. I fear that at midnight local time Admiral Yamamoto will have his sleep interrupted when all six of his aircraft carriers are simultaneously destroyed. Without his carriers he will have no choice but to return to Japan."

I tried to interrupt but the Professor talked right over my objections. "Even with the Americans intercepting the attack orders there will be no declaration of war without an attack. Not until another provocation takes place. But I fear this will not help Japan for long. Our next targets will be strategic locations in Eastern Russia, which they will have no choice but to view as a Japanese attack."

"You're mad. What possible benefit could you find in this."

"Mad? I am not mad Mister Densom. If only you could see all the pieces as I do. Then you might understand. But I will not risk your misguided patriotism getting in the way. Guards, take Mister Densom to the forward torpedo room and let him out for a swim."

I had to smile as the guards led me away. I would get away and stop him. But it was strange to think that Jab Densom would save the world by guaranteeing the attack on Pearl Harbor succeeded. I wonder what the CIA moles in the records department will make of this one...

(One Shiny Faux No-Prize for whoever realizes where the name Jab Densom comes from...)
