For the 2nd 30 Days of flashfic prompt #16, "write a scene that takes place at the end of a long road trip"
Summary: Down a member from betrayal, battered and weary from the fight that followed, the band makes their way to the nearest castle racing to reach there ahead of the invading army...

Kyle fought back the urge push the horses faster. Even he could tell they were already pushing them harder than they should. The poor animals were panting with a harsh wheezing that was painful to listen too and foaming at the mouth in a way he had always thought writers had made up. Rising higher on Lydia's shoulders he could finally make out the top of the walls over the next rise. "Yes! We've made it!"

With a final whiny, Rodrick's horse stumbled, the boy somehow managing to tumble clear without being crushed as the horse crumpled to a stop. Leaping down from Lydia's back, Kyle raced over, "Rod!"

"I'm fine! I'm fine, just startled."

"Can you stand?" Rod starred at his horse's body for a few hammering heartbeats and rose with a slow nod just as Kyle started to ask again. Only then looking ahead once more to the castle walls peeking over the next hill.

"At least I won't have to walk far. Perhaps we should walk the horses from here."

"Yes, I'd rather not have another scare like that. Help me back--" Even before he could finish Rod was lifting him up to Lydia's waiting arms.

"Everyone ready?" He looked up at Lydia's eyes for a second and sighed. "Maybe I'll figure out what to tell her uncle by the time we reach the gate."

She had only just nodded when a few drops of red struck her shirt and chin. Blood? While Lydia's eyes went wide he could hear the others readying their weapons. "Lyd?" A cough cut him off, stupid road dust, all those novels never talked about how bad it could get. "Are you okay?" Another cough and a few more red drops struck Lydia's shirt. Behind him he could hear the others starting to fight, but Lydia simply stared. At... At him. Slowly he followed her gaze and looked down at his chest. A jagged black needle reached a handspan out from his chest. How could he not feel that?

"Oh... That's not," this time the cough seemed to stretch the length of his body, "not good."

Lydia was holding him in front of her and he couldn't remember moving. Everything was gray, but his hearing still seemed fine. He thought he heard Rod and turned his head. He thought he turned his head, but everything seemed to change in snapshots, nothing moving between them.

"Hold still." Lydia's words were firm and sleep seemed better than fighting.

What's happening. Oh. I forgot that part of the pattern.

He startled himself as he laughed right through another coughing fit. "Damn."

"Hold still!"

"I Forgot." The laughter slipped away and he finished in a whisper. "The mentors always die, so heroes can shine."

"No. No! I will not permit it."

He wanted to argue. But his mouth didn't seem to want to work anymore. Lydia would have loved talking about the monomyth. Should have brought it up before now. But the gray was going black and he couldn't even feel himself coughing now.

"I will not accept that!"

Lydia's words echoed in his head as the last spot of light disappeared. At least it was warm. Missing the victory to come sucked. Spending eternity shivering would have sucked even more.
