This a Flashfic based on a prompt from
aldersprig and
kc_obrien's 30 Days of Flash Fiction: Round 2 Meme
My 30 Days Second Semester Index Page
Day 1 – Prompt: the story starts with the words "It's going down."
Setting: Another fantasy world. History for a character I had on the MZDM forums, Tomas sal Etian, who was a descendant of a rather hated pack of traitors.
"It's going down."
General Green should have scolded the servant boy for interrupting, but put a hand on his shoulder instead. "Indeed. Our old friends and new allies truly came through."
With another furious roar a fourth dragon let loose a lightning bright flash as it dove at Coral Port's city walls. Moments later another flash, then another. Before a minute was up a full dozen breeches laid open the last bastion of the cultists.
Patting the boy's shoulder the general turned to the dragon crouching by the emperor's tent. "Please, pass my thanks to your kin. We would have lost hundreds to get even a single breach."
"Your Majesty, the first of our troops are storming the city as I speak. Any final orders?"
For several seconds the Emperor continued to star at the wall. Or rather general Green realized at the base of the wall where the dying body of the Emperor's nephew and almost two dozen others had been tossed as the army came in sight of the wall. Green felt his anger rising again, barely forty and the Emperor already looked older and more tired than his grandfather.
"Only one. Show them the same mercy they have shown our people at every defeat. They have already stained the bay red, there's no reason left to hold our hand. Cut them down, Green. All of them."

The sun was setting and the smoke filled sky turning crimson. Looking over his maps and the latest reports from the runners general Green gave a grim smile. "Their last stronghold is broken. It will take days to make sure we've found them all, but the real battle is done."
Saluting another runner approached, holding a note out to the general in one hand. Holding it in the dying light the general's smile faded as he folded the note. "Lieutenant Edmon, find me a dozen officers two if you can and at least one of our senior mages."
Off to the side the Emperor turned from gazing at the remains of the wall. "What is it General?"
"A slight problem with our orders. They have always killed their own before we could take them, this time we must have killed one of the people responsible for that. We took a whole warehouse full of their wounded."
Green held up a hand as the Emperor raised a brow, looking back to the note, "Our boys didn't have any problem putting their swords to the men. But they saw that someone had tried to set the place afire and failed. The rest of the building held their children. That's the problem."
Green sighed as he looked back up to his weary Emperor. "I would be lying if I said I was sorry we still have men who draw the line at killing children. I won't put the blood on their hands. I'll take it, and the other officers I take there, and our boys can go back to their families with clean hands."
Turning back to face the city wall the Emperor closed his eyes. "After all they've done, the people won't stand for it if we let any of them go free. But if we do this, I spoke too quickly this morning, if we start killing children we start going down their path. I won't see their blood on your hands either. Take your officers and new orders with them. Any who are of age shall be considered traitors and shall die. Put the rest in chains. They will be the lowest of slaves, but they will live and can work to atone for their parents crimes."

Date: 2011-08-07 04:23 pm (UTC)Too bad the writer is not so kind. As mentioned at the top this was describing some back-history for a character I'd come up with for the MZDM forums when they were still going. The Emperor may have started to feel merciful, but sadly he doesn't last much longer. His son blames the traitors for not just the death of his father but of a good number of his relatives and a significant percentage of the population. So he puts more weight on the, "They'll be the lowest of slaves," part of what his father said. Cementing that with a ruling that none of them shall be freed with anything short of Imperial approval, stripping them of even the few protections that were extended to slaves in the empire, and declaring it treason to try and free one since it was on direct orders of the Emperor that they were slaves in the first place. So two hundred-ish years later by Tomas's time not one of them has ever been freed.
