If anyone ever suggests you hide under a truck traveling down a rough dirt road? Don't. Really, trust me and just don't. I mean sure, it sounds like a good idea if you're a total idiot. I'm not and it didn't. But you know that old rule? If it's stupid and it works? Well, it worked. I even got away from my latest pursuers. For values of Got Away that only care about a lack of handcuffs and pointed guns. And not getting squished by the tires. Not values of Got Away that care about pain and agony and ruining the back of your favorite and only jacket. But still I got away.

Supers School, Second exploratory writing

The beginning of the prior school year

Rae's old school hadn't had anything like the common room of Ocotillo Hall. It was like a laid back version of the library study rooms. Or maybe if you brought the cafeteria's outdoor seating indoors. A few tables were pushed over to the walls allowing for a wobbly loop of chairs to circle much of the space. Finally a girl with the tips of her hair dyed red stepped out into the circle. Rae recognized her from moving in the evening before, Margaret had been running back and forth half the time with a younger girl towed behind her with a stunned expression.

"Gather around newbies! It's time to start Ocotillo Hall's annual hazing ritual!"

"Margarete!" A short black haired boy stared at her from across the room. "Ixnay."

"Just a little hazing? Fine. Since Derek is being a spoilsport we can just go straight to introductions before we raid the food tables. Who wants to start?"( Continues under cut, click here to continue... )

So years ago with the Truth & Justice rules I created few characters for what I called the Fifth String Heroes. Characters who were not going to be meeting bank robbers fist to fist or alien invaders eye-beam to ray-gun, but were still super powered and found a niche for their powers... My two clearest ideas were The Auditor and The Sitter (my, what creative names :p). The first was a man who had a super powered intuitive grasp of economics. He can walk into a business, spend a short time reviewing the books, and tell you both how well the business is truly doing but also who needs to be investigated for embezzling and with a little more effort figure out what the embezzler was doing with the money. The sitter is a second generation cape born to two heroes. When she inherited some of their powers the assumption was that she would go into heroing as well -- where her passions took her instead was child care and now she is one of a small and select group, those who provide child care for super powered children.

This was in fact the early origin for Mourning Dead Gods (and the follow on Face the Music) as Kitree and Charles's son is one of the children she regularly watches.

So why am I bringing this up? Reading some recent posts by dialecticdreamer and ysabetwordsmith has me itching to pull out Truth & Justice once more and dust off these characters. The posts in question: Hero or Villain, Build a Better Villain, part one, part two, and part three. The three part Build A Better Villain follows from an initial idea to working out how this character ends up crossing the line to become a villain. And adding later: Responsibility, even for villains?

"Why can't I drop it? I need Introductory Kinesiology!"

"Every student must take a minimum of one class from the non-scholastic list every semester. School is stressful enough. Add powers on top of that... Trust me you'll need a stress free class."

"But I need Intro Kinesiology to understand my powers. What am I going to do with basket weaving?"

"I'll offer a deal, pick a course off the list and I'll put you on the reserve list for the evening session."

Sighing Leon read the list, a hint of a grin appearing partway. "I'll pick two for a guaranteed spot." Circling Recreational Dance and morning Tai Chi.

Ice Cream, or Tonya on the Run

There are times you wonder what the hell you think you're doing. With the police officer I'd just shocked clutching his arm and swearing behind me, and more back at their cars, and a super-villain with hostages in the bank right in front of me... I was well past the What Am I Thinking stage and right into the Did Five Years as PsyMinder's Brainwashed Toy Leave Me With a Death Wish stage.

Day 11 – Prompt: Write a movie trailer style trailer for a story, existing or not-yet-written

Two trailers. One for yesterday's Sacrifice, and another for the video game Magical Girl Apocalypse. I picture the narrator on both having Don LaFontaine's voice. But as he's dead, if any of these get filmed (hey, a guy can have unrealistic dreams, yes?) we can go with any of the guys from Five Guys in a Limo

Ran across a fun new comic online. Well, new for me, it's actually been going two years now. It's called Atomic Laundromat as follows David, the non-super powered son of one of the greatest heroes of recent history and a former despotic empress (they become trapped in a pocket universe for several months during a battle, and upon emerging David's grandfather told his father, "You got my daughter pregnant? You're either marrying her or dying."). He's not upset to be the sole unpowered child of the family, true heroism comes from within after all, not from powers or a cape. And besides, someone has to be there to clean the costumes of the super-powered.

As the title suggests, a fair amount of the comic takes place in David's atomic powered laundromat. Where he is aided by his transforming robot (made from a washing machine of course). There's the love interest, who has no super powers (though she wants them very much) unless maybe you count super-lawyering. A powerful psychic who asks for a job at the laundromat. The duck that was part a bartered payment before David stopped accepting those.

Recent storylines include his younger sister's Sweet 16 birthday party (Who as a the child who is visibly showing alien heritage has been chosen as the heir to her mother's throne) and his father's facing a trial.

Oh. I gave two titles up there, didn't I? This comic is available in English as Atomic Laundromat and in Spanish as Super Lavandería.

Which is handy for someone who's trying to learn Spanish on their own. :) (And it's released under a creative commons license that would even allow potentially sharing any graphical flashcards made from it so long as they were offered on the same terms and had proper attribution)
