Prompter: A square on my January Prompt Bingo, prompted by [personal profile] dialecticdreamer

"The power of discrimination? I didn't think people admitted that so casually anymore. Are the wraparound sunglasses the new pointy-hoods?" Rick grinned and laughed at his own joke.

"Not that kind of discrimination dork."

"Then why do you call it that?"

Nolan gazed up at the ceiling counting to ten in his head. "Freshmen, they think they know everything already. For your knowledge powers terminology was developed almost a century ago."Remainder of scene cut, click here to continue... )

Warnings/Triggers: Some use of expletives
Word Count: 562
Prompter: A square on my January Prompt Bingo triggered an idea

Harry looked up. Clouds. Nothing but clouds and the ribbon that was the far side of the colony ring arcing overhead. Only the knowledge that he'd just checked five minutes ago and five minutes before that kept him from checking his belt for his emergency breathing kit.

"What keeps it in?"

"What?" Jack was squinting at him as if he hadn't been hitting Harry with questions all day.

"The air, their's no roof. How can we still be breathing."

Flann sat perched on the side table and watched the mysterious girl sleep. There were times being a feline moddy could be quite useful. Being presumed little more than entertainment in the form of living art made meant few in the household paid any real attention to him. Which made his true job of protecting Lady Dwyer all the easier. Ever since the previous morning that meant watching this girl, young woman really, who had collapsed at the back doorstep without anyone seeing her arrive.

"Cat, you're sitting where her breakfast tray goes."

Credric looked through the door's peephole and walked away even as the knocking continued. Sitting at the table he turned up the radio's volume and returned to his homework. He was copying notes into his tablet on the history of Landing Bay when the phone rang. Sighing he picked up the receiver.

"I believe I've made my opinions clear already Mister Johnson. Tell my father I'm not interested."Continues under the cut )

"Not that Sheriff. It's just it didn't make sense before. It still doesn't, not really, but now I know what they wanted."

I posted my January Prompt Bingo card two weeks ago and have since written to six of the prompts:

I have one more partially written and have figured out where I intend to go with another. There are however two weeks of January left and plenty of time to leave prompts based on the bingo card squares. I've enjoyed writing to the prompts left so far, so even if I have some thoughts on where I might go with some of the unpicked squares, don't let that stop you. :)

Alfred Stein slowly came back to consciousness strapped to a chair. Strangely it was a few seconds of an unfamiliar bouncy Japanese pop song that coaxed him out of his sleep. A moment later a cell phone chirp and a voice he really hadn't wanted to hear in person both greeted his ears.

This one is almost short enough to be a drabble. Okay, almost 50% to long to meet the hardline drabble length limit, but that's still quite short. I almost never manage that.

Title: How'd That Happen?
Warnings: mild ickiness?
Length: 149 words
Genre/Setting: Modern Weirdness

"I didn't know this really happened."

"What are you talking about?" My roommate came in and I couldn't help but stare. He had something greenish-gray and wrinkled in his hand. At a second look it was translucent and glowing. "What the heck is that?"

"You know how much trouble I've been having all semester?"

"Dude, this whole year."

"Right. Well I was bored and started pulling boxes out from under the bed. I thought I had a box with a six pack of Jolt."

"You're kidding. Do they even make that anymore?"

"I think so. There's still some on the shelf at the corner store back home. Anyway, I opened the box and this was in it instead. I think I misplaced my mind when I was packing."

"Right, pull the other... Huh. It does sorta look like a brain."

"So what the hell do I do with it?"

Title: The Second Option
Warnings: Intended violence
Length: 537 words
Genre/Setting: Science Fiction

David had no idea what the college was thinking. Surely they couldn't believe such research would be tolerated even if the fools in the government dropped the ban. Even one member short, his team would soon put a stop to it. Poor Wilkes would be disappointed to miss the excitement. Who'd ever heard of someone being recalled to active duty just to have their vaccinations brought up to date.

Genre/Setting: In a world of mad science...

Only the need to for surprise kept Mina from stomping and slamming doors. Well, the need for surprise and professionalism. Even if that wasn't at all among the normal tasks of a personal assistant. Finding the right place she leaned against the wall near one of the darkened room's doors and waited. At least she knew the thieves wouldn't be long in reaching her, not as loud as they were to her. A few moments later the door opened and the three men entered with low light goggles aiming infrared flashlights at the far wall.continues under the cut... )

It was nigh inevitable, I've generated a bingo card using the bingo card generator I posted about earlier today (link found via [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith's post yesterday. I selected multiple of the pre-supplied lists and tossed in a list of my own.

I'll go ahead and stealborrow (with a little modification) some of [personal profile] aldersprig's bingo methodology here.
  • Pick a square and offer me a prompt based on that square. For example: "Forgotten: a student arriving for boarding school finds his name isn't on the list," could have been a prompt to produce Thomas Daniel.

  • I will write at least 100 words to the first prompt.

  • This is a bingo card, so prompts in the same row/column as previously written prompts will have an advantage. But an enticing prompt will likely catch my attention anywhere.

  • I don't guarantee a full scene/story, only 100 words. That said, I've found I rarely stay at a mere 100 words if something interests me. (Are you a stranger who isn't sure what I'm interested in? Check my writing tag, or any of the tags.)
