Looking through her front door's peephole Leona saw two officers and a woman in an obvious super uniform she didn't recognize. Her breath froze for a moment and she was tempted to run. The thought came to mind then was dismissed just as quickly. She knew running would do no good.
"Leona Siskin?"
"Yes."
"You are the wife of Raymund Siskin also known as Refraktor?"
She closed her eyes and nodded. If they knew that then they were certainly ready for her to run. That was probably the reason for the heroine in the background.
"Yes. Would you like to come in? I have dinner in the oven, I'll need to take care of that and call my mother to pick up Katrin if you're going to be arresting me."
"From your lack of surprise I assume you knew of Raymund's other identity already." The bare hint of a smile tried to break through the other woman's stern expression as they entered.
"Since before we were married. Silly boy got cold feet after proposing. Said he didn't want to put me at risk. Understand, he may be a thief but he's not a bad man. He's never threatened me, never raised a hand against his child, and he has limits he won't cross on the job."
The smile slipped away as the woman nodded. "Aye, always polite that one. Never started the fighting even when it would have been to his advantage. He got me once when I thought I'd caught him. Popped off a flare and one of his mirrors... I couldn't see a thing and he could have run immediately but he made certain I wouldn't go tumbling down the nearby stairs before escaping."
She'd only just put dinner in the oven so she moved it to straight to the fridge. "With Raymund's line of work we've always known this was a risk. I won't help you catch him but I won't give you any trouble either."
"Mrs. Siskin we're not... have you been watching the news?" the younger officer trailed off into an almost desperate question.
"Not in the past week. I never do when he's working."
The officer started to speak but the older one touched his arm and took over. "Mrs. Siskin I'm sorry to have to inform you..."
His words and all the ovens heat seemed to flee the room. Leona found herself seated half on a chair unable to remember moving. "No. No..."
"Mrs. Siskin. Leona." The other woman grasped her shoulders. "Remember this, whatever he may have done before he died a hero. He died saving you, your daughter, and countless others."
