Wah! Keep missing Oban!
Jun. 30th, 2006 09:02 pmAnyone else here caught any of Oban Star Racers? I've missed half the episodes so far, which is really annoying because it's looking good. I'm going to borrow the description someone going by Dvandom used on a post google found:
"What if the Vorlon's showed up at the Battle of the Line and called it so Humanity could participate in a race?" (Dvandom on the allspark forums)
A few years prior to the series Earth was almost invaded. All it's forces beyond Earth orbit were defeated and the defenders were (as in the Battle of the Line in B5) preparing for the last desperate, "We know it is hopeless, but it is all we can do," defense of the homeland. When suddenly the alien invaders break off their attack. What the public wasn't told was that a messenger appeared in the world government's chambers and announced that a great race would be held in a few years and that a truce was declared between all races that were invited to participate.
So Eva's father is considered one of the best race managers on Earth, and is recruited to form Earth's team. Shortly before they are due to leave Eva runs away from the boarding school he had sent her to ten years earlier and joins his team (taking the name Molly when she realizes that her father doesn't recognize her after not seeing her since she was 5 or 6). And when the original pilot/racer is injured Molly takes to the field to keep the team from having to forfeit.
Okay, so the race and vehicles seem reminiscent of the pod racers in a certain movie from a few years back, but so far there has been no equivalent of a certain poorly written comic relief character from the same movie of a few years back. It's not the best show ever, but it's looking to better the current average by a bit. (No constantly repeated catch phrases, no gratuitous screen time usage to push licensed merchandise, and the writers aren't afraid to be telling a continuing storyline.)
