Character a Day: Johnny Romero

Johnny Romero, he won awards each year of college in track, received scholarship money for dance, and turned the tide against the Trantin invasion. Not bad for a kid going to the little known Eastern Arizona University. Johnny Romero is one of the founders of the Sky Patrol and is one of five permanent members of the Patrol Council.
"That's the spirit! The Trantin think we're going to roll over easy just because they shut off our electricity and disabled our nukes. Whatever! Humans have built and conquered empires without those. We're smarter, we're tougher, and we're protecting our homes!" – Johnny Romero before the battle of Gila River
Only two days into the Trantin Empire's invasion of Earth Johnny, some classmates, and one of his professors came upon a poorly guarded landing craft. After a quick debate they agreed to a plan to seize the ship hoping to turn it over to the military. They had no sooner figured out how to operate it when they picked up word that the nearest base had fallen to the invaders. Rescuing troops who had escaped they became the core of resistance in the Four Corners states. Captured equipment flowed out of this region to labs around the world along with the knowledge that the Trantin could be defeated.
"The Dash? Come on you've all seen it on TV. Enough talking about me, let's not forget it only worked, I only dared take the risk, because the General was an honorable woman. I hope she didn't get in too much trouble after returning home, but we haven't been talking with the Empire..." – Johnny Romero, in an interview on the second anniversary of The Mars Dash.
In the second year of the invasion the morale of the Trantin forces was at an all time low. Outnumbered millions to one they had been depending on their ability to take out Earth's most advanced technology to shock the populace and gain the greatest advantage. After the first human victories the invaders had been forced to agree to a prisoner exchange in order to keep going until reinforcements arrived. When they suggested a second exchange, the military and resistance groups feeling they were close to victory refused the offer not wanting any of the captured aliens to return to the fight. During negotiations Johnny as a joke suggested that if the general was so desperate to end the war he'd race her for the outcome. To his surprise by the end of the day a route, stakes, and time were all set. A race through one of the smaller chasms of the Valles Marineris on Mars. If Johnny won there would be a formal cease fire, if the general won captured Trantin troops would be freed. Despite needing to use breathing gear with greater weight and bulk, Johnny kept pace with the general and even began inching ahead. Then came the moment replayed in every documentary. Two hours into the race a sniper severed Johnny's air hose, and would have killed him if the general hadn't arrived in time to patch one of her own air bottles into what was left of his gear. Furious at the treacherous action her own people had committed she then offered to surrender on the spot. Johnny wouldn't have any of that. They'd agreed to settle it with a race and by God they were going to settle it with a race. In light of their reduced air supply they agreed to end it with a sprint, one last mad dash to a rock about a hundred yards ahead. Despite having nearly suffocated minutes earlier, Johnny put on a burst of speed and beat the general to the new finish line by nearly a full second. True to her word an offer for a formal cease fire was presented before the end of the day. By the end of the week every Imperial had been ordered off Earth.
"It's a big universe. Heck, it's a big solar system. If we're going to take our place in this universe we need to get out there and see it for ourselves." – Johnny Romero speaking on the founding of the Sky Patrol.
Today a mere six years after the arrival of the Trantin Empire's invasion fleet Johnny is captain of the exploration ship Silver City. An enthusiastic supporter of the Patrol's formation he nonetheless refused to accept any position that would keep him stuck behind a desk. He needs a role that will keep him moving, keep him seeing new things. A role where he can dance among the stars. With a newly built ship based on a mix of human and Imperial technology he's setting out to find what's waiting around our neighborhood.
