Fandom/'verse: Original fantasy
Summary: The revolution may have ended while Gregory was still a young child, that doesn't mean it's stopped causing trouble.
Prompter:
aldersprig's Thimbleful Thursday Prompt for 11 September 2014, Add Insult to Injury
Triggers/Warnings: Don't see any
Note: Mostly unedited.
Words: 330 (Just squeaked in at the top of the 270-330 word goal)
Resting in the shade of an evergreen tree Gregory looked on the residence hall that would be his home for the next few years. While catching his breath a breeze washed over him and ruffled his short summer fur taking the edge off the summer's heat. Not that he was complaining. His parents always said Laufeld's don't complain, they get to work. Thoughts of getting a bed all to himself once more helped as well.
The dark furred woman behind the front desk gave him the same stare he'd been receiving since leaving the mountains.
"Student's only Spotty. Maintenance office is behind the Admin Building if you want work."
"I'm a student, Gregory Laufeld. Which room's mine?"
With a sniff she ignored him and started reading. He waited patiently until she looked up again. Sighing she checked her notes.
"You need to see the Hall Warden."
"That Gregory?" Called a voice from the right. "Come back to my office."
The man set out two mugs of tea. "I'm sorry, but a hold was placed on your application."
"But I paid three months ago."
"I'm afraid there was a Council hearing and the approval for your legacy rate room fees was revoked."
"Because I'm..." Gregory shook his head, "How much?"
"My sister lives in Fairview Bluff so I know your family wasn't like the others. The Reformed Housing Compact denies legacy status to the family of formerly noble alumni. The argument was they'd already received too many benefits under the old system. A complaint was filed with the Residence Council before last month's meeting and given the tone of the discussion I doubt an appeal would be granted."
"How much do I owe?"
"Almost three hundred more to cover through this and next quarter."
Gregory held his breath to keep from cursing. Paying that would wipe out most of what he had left. Sighing he nodded.
"I already planned on finding a job. This is just another reason to do so."
