Anyone local willing to share some basic household electrical skills? I have a lamp with a busted socket switch that I would like to fix instead of throwing out. Skimming through some web pages this looks like a pretty simple task. That said, I'd prefer to have someone with experience ready to slap me up the back of the head if I started to do anything stupid.

First things first: Unplug it before doing anything with it.

Beyond that, electrical work really is simple. Make sure it's good, tight, neat, and that wires won't get crossed and you should be fine. They'll sell replacement sockets, switches, and so forth at any home repair store... or even Wal-Mart.

I've already swapped it out for another lamp (rather plain blah one, which I have only kept because it has some family history).

The various sites I've found do make it look pretty easy. When I looked up prices last night I did see that the prices aren't that high. Pretty cheap. I think I'll change it over to a push-through switch. At least change it to something other than a three-way switch (I've switched most of them over to fluorescent bulbs anyway, which don't do three way).
