May you find peace, you will be missed
Oct. 9th, 2006 10:05 pmWhen I talked about never getting the chance again to talk to someone, I never expected one so close to home. I think we must have started going to Pischke's Paradise no more than a year after it opened. Frankly it feels like it opened longer ago than 1988. Even in Old Scottsdale it can be unusual to find a restaurant that's really truly a family owned and run place. Pischke's has been just that.
I hope the Pischke family won't give up on the place now. But with Chris's death on top of the troubles caused by the construction a few years ago I'd understand. They haven't had dinner service since early 2005. The new parking lot may be better than the two old ones it replaced, but the city managed to screw the whole area over while building the new parking. There just weren't enough customers making it in to afford to stay open for dinner. Money can really mess things up. There may be more parking now, but with a meal cut from the menu it makes it harder to higher a new evening crew.
Thank you City Council. You managed to drive one of your success stories to kill himself. Even if the family keeps the place open it just isn't going to be the same.
Chris was a great guy. The kind of restaurant owner you hope to find. Pischke's Paradise has been in some ways Scottsdale's Cheers. You didn't have to come very many times before you'd be greeted by name. It didn't take long before the family would ask about your family. How your sister's surgery went. Whether you'd heard from your parents while they were on vacation. It's the kind of place where customers stop by to bring a birthday or holiday card.
Damn it, it shouldn't be happening this way.
