Dear clueless people. When I tell you, "I'm sorry but that's a completely different department, I don't know the answer to that question. But this person should be able to answer it for you and that easier to reach person might be able to answer it for you and can contact the first if not." The proper response is not to simply repeat the question. And no, explaining why you need the answer to the question will not spontaneously cause the information to appear in my head. I am afraid I do not know every policy of every part of ----------. This applies triply if I offer to call over to that department myself (but believe me when I say it's often faster to head over in person, phone menus are just as annoying to us as it is to you) You know what? I'd rather be on the phone with the person who needed 20 minutes to do a straight forward cut & paste than four minutes with you. The cut & paste person is at least trying.

And while I realize it is a common misunderstanding, I am not secretly counting how many times you ask so I can give you the answer the seventh time.
