Character a Day: Denise De Haven
Nov. 27th, 2013 01:45 amDenise's eyes were locked on the ship ahead of them. Instead of reading the gauges and readouts she felt the way the controls moved under her hands and listened to the sounds...
"Captain, relax!"
"I didn't say anything."
"No, you're just twisting the arms of your seat. It's distracting, let me fly."
He sighed in the seat behind her then let her be. There, the engines were saying they could give her more, she eased the throttles up and watched the hijacked ship slowly come closer.
Denise De Haven is the primary pilot of the Silver City and frequently gets in friendly arguments with the chief engineer over just whose ship it is. She was the second human to pilot a Trantin ship after Johnny Romero and she quickly showed a near instinctive knack for flight. One of Johnny's longest companions she knew him even before the invasion, and she's quite willing to take advantage of his easy going nature and toss formality out the window.
Harland's shouting could be heard even before Denise opened the hatch into the boat bay. At times it was hard to believe the tiny astrophysicist was never a drill sergeant.
"Is there a problem Mister Harland?"
Cadet Fletcher started to back away the moment Harland's attention was on her, right until her glare turned on him. Harland's grin when he noticed this was almost evil.
"Nothing I'll waste further time on."
"Then good day Mister Harland, the Cadet and I have business to attend to."
Denise waited until the hatch closed before continuing. "Well now, how about you Cadet Fletcher, do you believe there was a problem?"
"Ah, well, the landing could have been better ma'am."
"Could have been better? I do believe that was the worst landing I have seen since the war. Did someone shoot up your shuttle, is that why you were wobbling like that?"
"No ma'am, I misjudged the grav-plate transition."
"Stow your gear and meet me in the simulator room in an hour. We're having a special training session."
"Yes Lieutenant, one hour."
"And cadet? Since we're holding this session in your honor, you can be the one to let the others know their attendance is required too."
This lack of formality does not extend to the Silver City's complement of pilot cadets. Among her old friends she calls them her kids, but among them she's a strict taskmaster. They're kept on a steady rotation of flight time, studying, and post flight reviews. It is actually from the cadets that Denise gained her nickname among the ship's crew, The Raven, for her black hair and the dread any of the cadets feel awaiting review after making a mistake.
