Fandom/'verse: Original science fiction
Summary: Demifiction - Internal email from colonial fleet intelligence regarding an intelligence asset
Prompter: Three Word Wednesday
Triggers/Warnings: None spotted
Note: Only lightly revised/edited
Words: 567
To: [redacted]
From: [redacted]
Subject: Intelligence resource [redacted]
Agents [redacted] and [redacted] have confirmed that resource [redacted]'s home has been burned. Despite official reports that the fire was accidental, likely started by faulty wiring, agent's investigation showed use of modern military thermite compounds and liquid accelerant (further analysis suggest synthetic lamp oil) at very easily detected levels. [redacted]'s home workstation appears to have been removed prior to the fire as no remains were found. [redacted] informed agent [redacted] of a hidden backup mirror drive which was located and retrieved. Examination of the drive reveals it was overwritten with random data repeatedly. After handing over the drive to data recovery experts the following file fragment was recovered, the file date is from one day prior to the fire and matches the last known date [redacted] was alive.
Analysts believe that this was the state of the file at the last auto-save. It appears that [redacted] was unable to continue operating the workstation at this point. Agent [redacted] has requested authorization for plan [redacted]. This office recommends authorization with coordinated implimentation of plan [redacted] to provide UEG Security with a plausible alternative to blame.

Sure I wasn't born until it was halfway over but I've always been skeptical about the official story of the first Re-unification War. Of course I quickly learned that this is one of those subjects one just doesn't ask questions about in school. It just seems insane to claim that there were two separate international conspiracies to take over the world that both infiltrated the major militaries of the world and that both would pick the same day to have their agents in the world's space forces start shooting at anyone who wasn't suborned by their conspiracy. Crazier still we're supposed to believe both conspiracies were equally matched in numbers with the result that ninety percent of the space fleets either clobbered or fleeing through the L2 gate before nuking it. Then we're supposed to believe that both side's survivors fled through that gate and immediately had a love fest and joined together rather than continuing the fight.
Yeah, I'd believe it was all an alien mind control conspiracy before believing that. And I don't believe in alien conspiracies any more than I believe the official story. No, ask yourself who got hurt worst in the great orbital insanity fest? America, Russia, China, India, all four of the biggest space powers didn't just lose ships they also took orbital strikes to their ground based space infrastructure. Kennedy, Baikonur, Vikram, Jiuquan, all struck in the first hour of fighting.
Who benefited from this? Anyone left with an intact launch site. Oh, unless you were from one of these four countries. Witness what happened when proposals were floated to expand Mojave. I'm not saying anyone was bribed, but it's an interesting coincidence that every major company that operated at Mojave had at least one senior executive arrested for claimed financial crimes. Interesting that after decades of expanding cargo flights Mojave was closed to all but passenger flights within five years. That French site in the Riviera? Closed for environmental reasons the next year despite the shortage of launch sites.
I haven't dared to even think hard about who I thought was behind it. I haven't even dared investigate from anything other than burner identities. But if the files I bought are accurate the colonies will be i
