"Well as I live and breath, Jonas McMillan has returned to grace us with his presence." Every hint of humor disappeared from Kincaid's voice. "I thought I made it clear you weren't welcome here cousin."
Metron was a minor colony but had enough traffic to provide them with an audience. Around them traders, travelers, and the rest turned to watch Kincaid and his crew face down two men. Jonas glanced around and smiled.
"If you don't want to share in my success that's your right. But you aren't the family or the town. But there is one deal I'd like to made with you. Just one. I want my parent's home. I know you haven't done anything with it. It's just been sitting there not doing you or anyone any good. So let's end this feud, what do you want for it?"
"You hear that boys, Jonas thinks he can just walk in here and make everything better by waving some cash!" Kincaid laughed, his henchmen joining in a moment later. "You don't get it do you boy. Why would I burn the place when you aren't here to watch? Wouldn't be nearly as pleasing if I didn't get to hear you crying."
"You don't want to do that 'Caid, I know you've been watching me as much as I've been watching you. You know perfectly well how successful I've been and you know you have what I want. This is the big opportunity you've been waiting for. The deal of your life, clear away your family's remaining debts and get the bank's fingers out of your land."
"Ha! Not everything is business Jonas. You think after what I watched my father go through I'd forgive your family? You think I'd let you sit there and start plotting against me? You can watch Fairbrook burn. In fact I insist you come and watch."
Jonas shook his head, "I'd hoped you'd be reasonable but I did not depend on it. Nicolai, the unreasonable plan if you would."
"Yes Mister McMillan. We'll proceed with the less pleasant plan."
The watching crowd edged back to give them more room when Nicolai approached Kincaid. Several of the henchmen reaching into pockets or under their jackets only to stop when their boss waved a hand at them.
"Pathetic, you brought someone to fight in your place?"
"Nicolai is, a specialist."
"You've softened Jonas. Maybe after burning your home I'll take your ship. Not very bright bringing it this close to me and mine."
Nicolai stopped arms reach from Kincaid and slowly reached into his suit coat. When he slowly withdrew his hand most everyone watching was surprised to see a memory card rather than a gun or knife. When Nicolai held it out Kindcaid took it and gave it a puzzled look.
"What?"
"Jeffery Kincaid Tomlinson, I am part of Mister McMillan's staff at Eckert, D'Souza, and Lee. Be advised you are being sued for breach of contract on the sale of Fairbrook and unlawful denial of an easement of necessity among several claims. The papers you have accepted have further details." Nicolai paused then added, "Your previous statement might be construed as a declaration of intent to commit piracy. I'll allow the Marshals to determine that." Stepping back as a uniformed woman approached Kincaid.
