Inspired in part by
haikujaguar's Word of the Day from her Wednesday with Rain post. Comes following, The Talk (LJ Link) And look, even a reasonable drabble length, under 250 words.
The Next Morning
Jayce listened to the breakfast chatter and mostly kept to himself the next morning. Even after all the food his great-aunt Gladys stuffed him with the previous night he was still hungry. Mostly however he was simply trying to figure out who got along with whom in this new house. Most of the cousins and aunts and uncles had finally left leaving the dining room much quieter.
Wrapping a few slices of bacon in a pancake Jayce passed the bundle to Izzy. Patting the boy's head before going turning back to see a raised eyebrow from aunt Gladys.
"Do you always cosset the boy?"
"Oh, only most of the time I suppose. But he is a good boy. Does as he's told, works hard, and rarely complains."
"Well, see that he does behave. He may belong to you but this is my house, if he sets a bad example for the rest of the staff I will have to take action."
"I'm sure that won't be a problem. You're going to be behaving, right Izzy."
Looking up Izzy nodded, quickly swallowing the last bite. "Yes Master. Yes ma'am, I'll be good."
"Good. Just so you know, we set out food by the kitchen for the staff. No need for him to be stepped on if anyone forgets he's kneeling there."
"I see. I'll try and remember that tomorrow."
"Not to worry dear, I'm sure a good boy like him will remember."

Date: 2011-08-12 02:25 am (UTC)As far as she's concerned Izzy may be a favored slave, but he's still a slave and therefor doesn't belong at the table. Family and guests only, anyone else better be there to serve the meal.
And of course there's the unspecified threat to give both a reason to remember.
