Day 4 – Prompt: one for the road.
Setting: Tales of the Mascot, wherein your average geek finds himself called by the Powers That Be to be the animal companion and guide to a new group of heroes.
One For the Road
Tamitha walked into the room and froze. On the far side by the windows most of their party was laughing as Kyle swung a broom about like a sword. The foxish creature hopping back and forth to portray both sides of a fight. Turning back to Lydia, who as often was busy reading, she sought out the group's voice of rationality.
"What is he doing now?"
"Telling a story."
"Is it some sort of lesson?"
"No."
The clatter of the broom falling to the floor and a cry of pain across the room got Tamitha's attention again. Spotting Kyle crouched on the floor, scooting back on his knees while holding his right wrist, his hand held back as if hiding it. Only to spring up, grabbing the broom and jabbing it out where he had been crouching. His next words growled out.
"No... I am your father. Search your feelings, you know it is true."
Dropping down to the floor once more Kyle cried out a pathetic, "No! Nooooo!"
The sounds of a page being turned brought her eyes back to Lydia, who had returned to studying. "Is he really acting all the parts?"
"Yes."
"For how long?"
"About a five minutes after you left."
"Why?"
"Because he is drunk."
"What! He's gone and got drunk after telling us to be careful? How many has he had?"
"One."
"One?"
"Yes. He said he was going to have, I quote, one for the road."
"And he's drunk after only one?"
"It is apple wine and he is small."
