I mentioned this one on twitter earlier. It's an attempt at starting to explore a new setting idea through free writing.

Title: Skyland Lesson
Fandom/'verse: Science fiction, far-far-far future
Summary: A teacher speaks about obviously foolish legends of humanities origins.
Warnings/Triggers: Should be safe.
Word Count: 409

Kesley clapped for attention until the children gathered in the classroom stopped chattering and turned their attention to him. He allowed the silence to fill the room until he was certain all were ready to listen.

"Some legends claim that in countless days past, in days before the first Skyland, in days even earlier there was a time when the God had yet to gift his chosen with the first Skyforge, and in those days humanity walked upon the surface of the planets. Some myths claim this world was Venu the Sunskimmer. They claim that in those days Venu was gifted with towering clouds that sheltered the surface from the Sun's heat.

"Others say the desolate planet Erith was our first home. They point to features they claim could never have naturally formed. They point to the Grand Trench deep and wide enough to fit even the largest Skyland with its sharply formed walls. Or they point to the abandoned crater dome's on Lun, never explaining why these should count more than those on any other moon.

"Still others point to Maras the Forbidden. They claim proof by the refusal of all Navs to accept Maras as a destination. Surely they say, in the days before time when we were cast from the paradise of the endless garden of our first home's surface, God would have forbidden our return until our many sins were redemed. These heretics claim that the invisible guardians that destroy anything that approaches the air over Maras are proof that Maras was that planet.

"There are even those who claim life started on the forsaken world of The Messenger, a world they claim was destroyed by God's anger, cast into the red fires of the Sun. Know children that The Messenger World is but a story. The Sun is as the Sun was and as the Sun ever shall be. It is a parable on the consequences of failing to do your job, not an accurate history of The Sky.

"A homework assignment, chose one of the first three planets and write at least a thousand words explaining why this world cannot be the home of humanity. Show that you can prove this through reason then after your thousand words cite at least four Verses that support your argument."

The children groaned at this unexpected assignment. It was time, Kesley decided, to make use of a learning game to distract the children from their dismay.
