There's enough cheese leaking from this folded over tortilla that I'm starting to think I might as well skip the tortilla and make chupaquesos.

Mmmm, crispy cheese.

In other problematic news, I keep having conversations like this with my sense of entitlement.

Me: Woohoo! The store card is paid off, zero balance!

SoE: Hey, cool, you know what this means?

Me: What?

SoE: We could buy an awesome new computer!

Me: Wait, what? This one works just fine.

SoE: Did you know they sell laptops with four core processors now? That's eight simultaneous threads! Ooh! This one has seven and a quarter hours of battery life!

Me: I said, this one works just fine! How much does that cost any-- what! No, I'm not dropping 2K on a new laptop!

SoE: Seven hours of--

Me: NO! I just paid that card off. The whole point is to get to zero debt. Not get deeper in debt.

(SoE uses puppy eyes. Puppy eyes attack fails.)

Me: No. Maybe once everything is paid off. But not now.

SoE: If I wait can I have a laptop with an eight-core processor?

Me: Maybe.

SoE: Yay! (SoE does a Happy Dance!)

I have, after spending some of my lunch break on it, come to the conclusion that I was starting my Day 29 (write about a [person] and their [animal]) piece too early. But at least it's only after 245 words of too-early and not pages and pages of too-early.

On the other hand, with homework to do as well, it does mean I probably won't be posting a completed Day 29 entry tonight.

So I finally got around to looking up in detail how crossposting works. To which my response is, "Oh. Um... Why didn't I set this up ages ago?"

Of course that's assuming this post made at DW actually crossposts to LJ.

(Oh look, it works. Just need to look up all the fiddly bits for the footers since it looks like those are customizable crossposting footer created)

And one last edit: I'm not planning on abandoning LJ. But I suspect I will be shifting to mostly posting here and mostly using LJ to read/comment with people who haven't moved to dreamwidth. And who knows, one of these days I might actually get around to setting up a proper stand-alone blog on the lilfluff domain name (Someone may have beat me to the AIM account name, but the domain name is mine :))

Day 28a – Prompt: Overhearing a conversation (with some next day revisions)

Universe: More of Nyalla in the magi-tech fantasy setting.

Content warning: Contains no sex, a catgirl, a catboy, and an elf of the female persuasion. Mild language, but nothing that couldn't be on TV.

Oh look, it's under 500600 words (by onea few).

I have a partially completed Day 28 of [personal profile] ravenswept's 30 Days of Flashfic. A partially completed Jayce & Izzy piece (which I almost rewrote changing PoV). And as well a mostly completed homework assignment.

I think I shall actually be going to bed instead of finishing any of them. I will hopefully have more energy tomorrow.

I had a sudden thought while (remainder of sentence purged for TMI). And that thought was this, there totally should have been an old school RPG in the 70s maybe early 80s that made use of some variety of custom slide rule.

How? Good question. Perhaps taking something along the lines of the rainbow chart in the old Marvel RPG (and IIRC third edition Gamma World) and instead of printing up a full page chart drop in a cheap plastic slip-stick. "Okay, it's this difficulty so I set the index here, I rolled this, so the result is blue... Woo!"

Yeah, like I say in the title, a geeky thought even considering we're talking about early table top RPGS.

Speaking of geeky things, this post is a fairly big hint as to the geeky birthday gift I bought for myself. It turns out that there's still at least one model of a student slide being made, and Think Geek has it on sale. :)

It's strange. I've always considered myself a cat person rather than a dog person (some bad experiences with neighbor dogs when I was still only about knee high). But dang, foxes are cute.

I mean check out Sagittor's picture Mother and Cub III. Cute. Or from the same person a picture titled, Get Ready. I mean really, just look at that cute fellow.

And those are just your every day red foxes. Fennec foxes... Oh my, don't look at this cute sleepy fellow in Kyoto if the ones above were too cute for you. Or this baby fennec in Korea. Those ears! Or this cute sleeping Fennec couple at the Phoenix zoo.

I'm not sure when exactly it happened. But somewhere along the way this cat guy became a fox guy. Hopefully I won't in a few decades become the male equivalent of the crazy cat lady. "Police and animal control report today that a local man was found to have forty-two foxes in his apartment. Neighbors say, 'He was quiet, but he always seemed nice. Confused, but nice.'"

So, one of the webcomics I read is Misfile. The short sum-up of the story is this: "Once a slacker angel in heaven's records department was almost caught smoking a joint on duty. In his rush to clean up he shoved several files away without checking to see what drawer they went in. Unfortunately for him, while he didn't get caught violating the angelic say-no-to-drugs policy, he has been locked out of records due to a completely separate security crisis. Meanwhile, on down on Earth two teenagers wake up to discover side effects of their heavenly files being misfiled... Ash wakes up to discover that not only is he now a she, but that everyone remembers him always being a girl; while Emily is suddenly two years younger due two the last two years being dropped out of her folder before it was shoved back into the filing cabinets up in heaven."

Now, in some stories we would have seen someone try to molest Ash right at the start. Here it didn't happen until almost page 1800. Anyway, Ash has snuck over to visit Emily (who is currently grounded) and has told her about what happened. As a result Emily has decided to pass along some self-defense tips. Ash, really, she shouldn't have to tell you tip #3.

Fun webcomic. Just make sure you have plenty of time if you start. It has a sizable archive. Today's page is page 1,824 and while that includes cover pages and a few other non-story pages, that's still quite a few.

Okay, time for an utterly random poll question. Once again, not on a paid account so answers are by replies.

Q. When eating candies such as M&Ms or Reese's Pieces, do you eat a color at a time, or just grab at random?

Why this not working?
I not follow directions,

Blarg. Lost a few days to homework. Expect more homework will each much of this evening.

Day 27 – Prompt: Trapped

Content warning: off-page deaths, violence and implied threat of abuse against an underage catgirl, and a homework induced lack of editing.

I originally came up with Nyalla in as part of an example in a discussion about catgirls in RPGs on rpg.net. And yes, at this point in her life Nyalla's life doth suck.

Nyalla's ship is captured and ransacked under the cut... )

What? No not perverse like that. Perverse as in it twists Dalek thinking into unnatural (for them) directions.

So, if you read [livejournal.com profile] jeriendhal's 30 Days of Drabble - Day Six it involves Daleks on a post apocalypse Earth. After reading it an unnatural thought occurred to me.

Posit that you have a Dalek of unusual thinking as part of the pursuit, one who runs through this chain of logic.

Daleks are the universe's superior form of life. But that pesky Doctor keeps interfering with things. This ruined planet is Earth. The Doctor likes Earth and the Humans. The Doctor will stop interfering if it would threaten human survival. (here comes the unnatural, for a Dalek, twist) Thus if the Dalek's are protecting the humans The Doctor will be neutralized.

"WE SHALL PROTECT THE HUMANS?"

"WE SHALL!"

"WHY SHALL WE PROTECT THE HUMANS?"

"WE WILL PROVE DALEKS SUPERIOR. THE DOCTOR HAS FAILED. THE EARTH IS RUINED. THE HUMANS ARE DYING. DALEKS SHALL SUCCEED WHERE THE DOCTOR HAS FAILED."

Okay, fine, you insist this isn't truly perverse and the title was a lie? Fine, a scene resulting from the above.

"You want me to do what!"

"HUMANS MUST NOT GO EXTINCT."

"THE HUMAN FEMALE AND THE HUMAN MALE SHALL PROCREATE."

"PRO-CRE-ATE! PRO-CRE-ATE!"

"This is all somehow your fault Doctor."

From James Nicoll's review of Rocket Girls (the novel)

"Japanese Space True Believers seem much less annoying than Anglosphere Space True Believers. I wonder why that is? It cannot just be that it is a comedy; Anglosphere Space True Believer comic SF exists and is generally pretty horrible.

[From comments:

I have a theory about why this worked for me where an Analog-style Purest Lead Comedy wouldn't: the people Nojira spends the most time casting as comic figures are the people on his side, the staff of the SSA. My memory of such comedy musings as the Captain Empirical stuff is that the main targets were uppity third worlders and feminists: the author's enemy.]"

(Note these are both from James Nicoll, top part in the review, the bottom part in the comments section)

You know, I think this is good advice in general. Treat your opponents fairly in what you present, and if you're going to tease then tease your own side. For one thing it suggests that you are yours are capable of taking a joke. It also implies a degree of confidence since you aren't being hyper paranoid.

I have just noticed that [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll has a, "memetic prophylactic recommended," tag. Nifty tag and good advice to keep some of those on hand.

If I say, "Vampire," to you is what you picture:
* A member of the undead
* A monster, but not undead
* Not a monster & not undead
* Something else?
