Day 12 - Write a scene at a sushi bar

Heh. Didn't expect at all to have this idea. Another modern day fantasy. According to stereotype the fetish, trope, or whatever you want to call it, that comes up in this is common among fanfic written by teenage girls (female fanfic authors being mandatory by the fanfic stereotype legal code). Of course seeing as how this isn't fanfic, and I'm neither a teenager nor a girl...

I suspect the final question is probably pretty common too.

No foul language, nudity, or sex hidden below under the cut.

Title: Oops

Nor shall I insist on giving any One True Pairings under this cut... )

Thoughts a third and a thirtieth of the way through Ravenswept's 30 Days of Flashfic

I was going to do an, "A Third of the Way" post, but yesterday got a touch busy and next thing I knew it was Oh-My-Goodness-Way-Too-Late O'clock. So, an extra thirtieth of the way in, here are my thoughts.

The original post called for 250 +/- 50 words a day, but I quickly discovered that my mind isn't wanting to work at that size (which means I'll probably work at doing some that size later, as a sort of mental muscle stretching). So I've switched to a target size of 1/2 to 1 page at OpenOffice Writer's mostly default settings (I have done a few things like switching off smart quotes). Based on a quite check of three days I'll say I'm averaging around 550-600 words. Hey, come November that's already almost a third of the rate that would be needed for NaNoWriMo.

While I have had a few days where I tossed out the first try or two (or three) at a prompt where they either wouldn't fit within the size or just weren't coming together, I have been able to complete each day. After the first day I thought I'd do more sooner with the characters I came up with then, although I did return to them on day ten. More of a surprise was how much fun I had going back to an old RP character from a short attempt at a superhero game.

Mainly for my own use, under a cut I've got a summary of the eleven days scenes.

A summary of the previous days )

I'm not planning on doing more with Tonya immediately. Although who knows, on some of these days I haven't decided just what to do until sitting down and starting the file. Day 10 was pretty much in mind from the moment I finished Day 1. I will probably make a post sometime soon with some notes for the setting for those two days. Tomorrow's prompt, "Write a scene in a sushi bar," looks to be one of the days where I will have no idea what I'm going to write until I sit down and start writing. On the other hand, day 14's "Write the final scene of a romance novel 'Never Been Caught'" has had an idea percolating in my head from pretty much the start. I'm also hoping my idea for Day 26 "Write a personalized rejection letter for the YA novel 'Sparkle Lust'" will be well received.

It's been fun so far. Quite looking forward to the next nineteen days.

Day 10 - Write a scene focused around a musical instrument

Hurrah, the scene I had in mind for this prompt went down on paper (er, electrons?) without too much trouble. With a return visit from Day 1's Alicia and Thomas.

I think I'll call this one, Music Therapy

Day 9 - Write a scene working from the title “Roses are Red, Violets are Dead”

Under the cut, Tonya gets some closure )

This came out longer than my self-imposed max length, but I like it. Assuming the idea in my head cooperates with me, tomorrow's piece will return to the setting and some of the characters from the first day's "Hello" scene. Tonya will probably get a break while I ponder filing the serial numbers of the background. Not out of any fear of fanfic cooties, but simply because I don't really have enough knowledge of the Marvel universe to feel comfortable writing in it (wasn't worried in the game as it was intending to quickly leave Earth for the larger universe ).

Day 7 - Write something dirty (take that how you will)

Like the others doing this 30 Days project, I'm taking dirty in the sense of muck, mud, and the like rather than sexual in nature.

Day 6 - Write a scene with people talking, but without any actual dialog

I'm calling this one Betrayal.

Story Note: Tonya is a character I originally created for a Mutants & Masterminds game was set in the Marvel comics universe. It was set just after the Civil War storyline. Part of her background was that her mutant powers started to kick in early, leading to her being spotted and forcefully recruited into a villain's band of so-called revolutionaries. She has "electro-magnetic" powers. Unlike Magneto she can't throw metal objects around with her mind, but she can mentally make simple radio connections and she can also mentally manipulate electronic systems. In the chaos of the 'civil war' Tonya's able to contact the authorities so she can break free...

Not entirely satisfied with it but this is the third or fourth variation on it I've written (I also wrote a version for the "A scene with only dialog" prompt that I'm even less satisfied with)

Oh, and some use of Four Letter Words.

Day 5 – Write a scene entirely in dialog

Considering that 1, 2, and 4 were almost entirely dialog you wouldn't think this was a troubling one. After two failed attempts I decided to do a continuation of the fourth writing prompt.

Day 4 - A Hostage Scene

This one gave me trouble. My original fic was set in a shared universe from a forum I'm on. It was a much more traditional and straightforward hostage scene. With criminal hostage takers, hostages, and even a hero. I also didn't need to run a word count on it to see that when I finished it was way, way, way over the max length limit.

So instead here's why younger brothers should watch out when their older sister is put in charge for the weekend...

I ran across Ravenswept's 30 Days of Flashfic after following a link about one of the stories [livejournal.com profile] aldersprig did for it. After giving it some thought I've decided to give it a try.

My 30 Days of Flashfic Index Page

The first day's prompt is: Write a scene saying “hello”

The directions say to go for 250 words +/1 50. The word count is reporting back 299 which is on the heavy end. But as my first draft clocked in at 365 words. More under the post cut.

Today Ryan Macklin has posted a playtest pdf file of the Character Creation chapter for Mythender. I'd heard the game's concept (Become a hero of legend who takes on the Myths and gives them what's coming to them. "...or it’s about stabbing Odin in his good eye and telling him how much of a little punk he his. It can go either way." is a quote from the website), but it wasn't until he posted the sample of the rules that it really grabbed me. Now I'm quite interested in seeing this out and ready for play.

Link to the Character Creation Playtest PDF file: http://ryanmacklin.com/2011/05/mythender-character-creation/

Quick TL;DR summary of character creation: Pick a Heart & History (what kind of Mythic character are you and what were you before you became Mythic), say what your weapons are that you fight Myth with (personal qualities, relics, and companions), your Fate (basically what's the archetype of your characters Myth: Judgment, Death, War, Life, etc.), then state state how you connect to the others in the group of game.

Note: This is all by answering questions. No random stats and only a touch of, "Pick one from column A and one from column B".

Here is what I came up with while reading through the chapter. This guy is incomplete so far, no name, :

Heart - Bearer:

- How did you gain your relic: After the fall of my village I was left for dead, waking at the side of my forge with my broken hammer in hand. I walked about my village in a daze and did not return to my senses - if I ever truly have - until I found myself back before my forge with metal scraps from all my neighbors and the few murderers who fell. I did not know what I was seeking when I woke my forge's coals again, only that I must work what I had collected. For three days and three nights I worked without sleep. When I was finished I looked upon my new hammer. It was shaped neither like my old hammer nor like the usual warrior's hammer but more like the rune Lagu.

What does your relic whisper to you when you touch it: Justice must be. Justice will find all. Those who wrong will right themselves or be made right. No one may escape justice, no one.

Do you trust your relic? Why/why not? My hammer has served me well since the day its forging was complete. The iron and blood of my neighbors and kin are within it. But I never forget that some of the scraps came from the brigands who murdered them. If the souls of my kin are within, might not theirs be as well? My relic whispers, but I will always be wary of the softest whispers.

History - Mourner:

What did you lose? The last day of my old life ended before the dawn. Brigands fell upon my home village thirsting not merely for gold, but the iron of blood. I woke to the shouts of my neighbors and grabbed the hammer from my forge. To my undying shame I did not wake soon enough to save even a single one of my people from the sword. I have lost my family, my neighbors, my home in all its forms.

What should you have done to prevent this loss? I should have woken earlier. I was the strongest of my village. I should have stood between my people and the murderers. I should have saved them or died trying.

How has losing maimed your soul? I know to the deepest core of myself that I have nothing to return to. My family is dead. Those I grew up with are dead. The land has either gone fallow or is now home to strangers. And if I dare to take others as new friends or family or new land as my own, is this a betrayal of those I lost? Do I dare risk losing all again?

A Mourner's Bonds:
(Characters would be listed here in an actual game)
- _____ gives me a reason to continue.

- _____ reminds me of what I've lost.

- _____ gives me solace.

- _____ joins me in suffering.

Your first weapon: My Hammer is my weapon. I use it to end myths crushing the weapons of those I face forcing them to face justice. (Relic: Strength 4)

Your second weapon: My quest for justice is my weapon. I use it to end myths by bringing an accounting for their actions. (Intrinsic: Strength 3)

Your third weapon: My endurance is my weapon. I use it to end myths by bearing the unendurable. (Intrinsic: Strength 3)

Mythic Heart: New, still in the first months of being a Mythender.

Myth: The Myth of Judgment

- The Dream of Judgment: I seek to bring balance to those who approach in my dreams. The victims give me those I must seek for redress. When I find their wrongdoers in life or dream I can give their victims peace. The unjust face judgment. Those who will acknowledge their wrongdoing may hope for some mercy. Those who will not repent will be made to regret their choice.

- The presence of Judgment: A sense that the Fates are close seems to happen around me.

The forms of Judgment:

- Mortal form: I appear as one longer a child by not long a man. I have muscles easily seen from working hammer and forge. Dark hair and black eyes and a face frames by roughly trimmed hair at the sides. Hair kept short for the heat and sparks of the forge.

- Godly form: I appear as a tall man, almost half again my usual height. My muscles do not appear to have grown larger but instead seem hard as iron under my skin. In one hand I have my hammer, grown in size with me, in the other a simple balance scale made not of gold or silver but of unpolished steel. Likewise my clothes as well are without gold or silver decoration. A sleeveless shirt and pants made or fine but undecorated cloth are covered by a heavy leather work apron.

- Paragon Form: I appear much as I do in mortal form, with a hint of the muscles of my godly form.

- Supernatural form: As I approach my fate I grow in height, my clothes somehow growing with me, as if I always had this size and my mortal form a trick of the eyes. What clothes I have grow in the quality of their making - losing any needless decoration at the same time. Muscle and build show strength. Not that of one who builds them for vain show, but the strength of work.

From last week: Sandy returns to the shop to discover a certain young girl is visiting again. The girl actually shows up a few strips earlier, but if I keep going back I'll end up linking to the first page. :)

Then we finally discover the girl's name! And for those who didn't catch the previous storylines in which the girl appeared, you now know that she did not realize what she was in for the first time she showed up.

And finally today's page (As soon as it is no longer the newest page, use this link) the newish girl is given a rule from Sandy that I am not certain Doc would support. "Not a toy? What do you mean those aren't toys? Sure the ATF, DOD, and Homeland Security complain whenever we pull them out, but they complain about all the fun toys." Interestingly it looks like the girl agrees. I think she's going to fit in just fine.

You know how in preschool you would get the lesson, "After going potty you need to wash your hands," that your parents first taught you reinforced?

Do we perhaps need an e-commerce preschool in which people can be taught, "After getting a credit card number, make sure you aren't saving it clear-text on a public facing server." And should we not consider companies that make this mistake to still be e-commerce toddlers? Possibly quite cute, but not yet ready to be given serious responsibilities.

Similar lessons being, "Don't store their password, store a hash of the password," and "Use SSL on those login pages, it's good for you."

Hey everyone, remember a while back when I made a post about how [livejournal.com profile] djinni (Tod) was doing free user icons for people? Guess what he's doing again? That's right, a nifty webcomic called Ekwara.

Wait... That's true, but I meant to say that he's doing another free icon day. It is in fact the 15th Icon Day (which is going into day two...) in which you can get a free user icon with just a few limitations. Mainly, no porn and no fan art of other people's IP. He does also ask that you make a post mentioning to others that the icon day is in progress.

Tips have reached the point that all the icons will be done in color like the one I'm using on this post, and anyone who tips gets a second icon as well. If they get a little further he'll even do a 24 hour comic. He's even raised the possibility that if tips reach a record level there might be a third icon in it for people.

What? Still here rather than there? Then you might be interested in some other nifty things too. For instance, there is Virmir's comic Crimson Flag which Tod was helping with until recently when Virmir felt up to doing not just the writing but pencils, inking, and colors as well. Or if you prefer written works, then how about a web serial? MCA Hogarth is doing a serialized awesome story called Spots the Space Marine, which is getting pretty intense as it heads into the conclusion.

So [livejournal.com profile] kylecassidy mentioned that his New Years photo tradition started back in the days of film and I thought to myself... "Oh yeah, those film brand memory cards were annoying. They were like CD-Rs, you could write to them but not erase so you had to keep buying them over and over, no, worse than a CD-R, a CD only goes bad if you leave it in a car on a hot day where it starts to melt as the car becomes and oven. Those old film brand memory cards went back if you just let too much light on them..."

Is it a bad thing if you start muttering, "Get off my lawn you dang kid!" at yourself?
