Only the need to for surprise kept Mina from stomping and slamming doors. Well, the need for surprise and professionalism. Even if that wasn't at all among the normal tasks of a personal assistant. Finding the right place she leaned against the wall near one of the darkened room's doors and waited. At least she knew the thieves wouldn't be long in reaching her, not as loud as they were to her. A few moments later the door opened and the three men entered with low light goggles aiming infrared flashlights at the far wall.continues under the cut... )

It was nigh inevitable, I've generated a bingo card using the bingo card generator I posted about earlier today (link found via [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith's post yesterday. I selected multiple of the pre-supplied lists and tossed in a list of my own.

I'll go ahead and stealborrow (with a little modification) some of [personal profile] aldersprig's bingo methodology here.
  • Pick a square and offer me a prompt based on that square. For example: "Forgotten: a student arriving for boarding school finds his name isn't on the list," could have been a prompt to produce Thomas Daniel.

  • I will write at least 100 words to the first prompt.

  • This is a bingo card, so prompts in the same row/column as previously written prompts will have an advantage. But an enticing prompt will likely catch my attention anywhere.

  • I don't guarantee a full scene/story, only 100 words. That said, I've found I rarely stay at a mere 100 words if something interests me. (Are you a stranger who isn't sure what I'm interested in? Check my writing tag, or any of the tags.)
  • additional notes and card underneath the cut )

[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith has linked to a bingo card generator made by [personal profile] magistrate. It allows you to give your own list of entries to draw from or to choose from one or more built in lists (including several provided by [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith).

So choose your list(s) of prompts and get that creativity flowing...

I'll have to update the landing page with the items that aren't on it yet, but tomorrow after I've had sleep. And now my list of last year's fiction writing... (Where not otherwise indicated, links are to Dreamwidth posts)

2013 Fiction Writing in Review

Word Count according to my tracking spreadsheet: 41,788 (avg 114 words/day)

    Independent One-Offs (so far)
  • Thanks Royce, or Dragons on the Mind (LJ link) a brief snippet of an idea that came to mind. A girl showing up for parent teacher night not with her mother, but her mother's boss The Dragon. So far follow-up attempts have failed to come together.

  • Mecha Hero? (LJ link, dA link) A mecha pilot volunteers only to have the war end before his training does.

  • Perfect Escape (on dA) Doc Despair is tired of constantly fighting the super heroes, so he sets in motion a plan to escape their attention... (a partial rewrite has been made but not completed).

  • Long Live the King. A scrapped followup to 2012s Surrender (LJ link). Bleh. May eventually give another try to writing a followup to that, but this wasn't it.

Tonya, AKA Circuit Bender, AKA The Sparkler
  • Ice Cream (LJ link, dA link) Tonya runs across an acquaintance from the bad (not-so) old days.

  • There is an additional incomplete follow up a few days/weeks after Ice Cream, which will hopefully be finished this year.

    Character-a-Day

Seven days of characters created using FATE Core, with short snippets involving them.

  • Johnny Romero (LJ link) Hero of the Trantin invasion of Earth, and captain of the Sky Patrol ship Silver City.

  • Denise De Haven (LJ link) Primary pilot of the Silver City and taskmaster of the Pilot Cadets.

  • Rav (LJ link) Exiled Trantin who once almost killed Johnny and now follows him serving out a debt of honor.

  • The Professor (LJ link) A professor of SCIENCE! One of Johnny's former professors who now serves as an advisor on the Silver City.

  • The Kid (LJ link) An orphan who stowed away on the Silver City to see a bit of the universe in the time she has left.

  • Bethlyn, head of security (LJ link) Haunted by the past Bethlyn is driven to train her people to perfection.

  • Wanda: The Reporter (LJ link) Embedded gonzo journalist on the run from her family's reputation.

    In other people's playgrounds
(Content warning: while I don't think these two items should be problematic, Addergoole has content that may bother/offend some such as mind control, slavery, and abusive relationships)
  • That Girl Thursday: Cody (LJ link) a few paragraphs describing Cody sh'Leyla cy'Caitin oro'Yolanda, aka that girl who somehow remained (mostly, usually) happy even after Addergoole started revealing its secrets. Even if (as with most students) the school was not at all what she expected. Arguably happier at Addergoole than she was at her old school.

  • Guest Story: How to Trap a Cody (on Addergoole.com) in which Cody finally finds her way to Addergoole's library.

  • There was another guest story, but it was emailed way late (and might have run afoul of spam filters). On the other hand that's an opportunity to give it another editing pass and maybe split it up into a few smaller pieces.

  • Unfinished/unposted: Down the Rabbit Hole/We Did What?! Part Three. Hopefully to be finished this year.

Unfinished items (other than those mentioned above)
  • I tinkered with a few pieces in a shared universe setting called Fenspace, none of which have yet been completed.

  • I also at long last started on the third part for Unquiet Past. Hopefully returning to working on it soon.

  • Started two attempts at following up Oops (on LJ), AKA 30 Days prompt 12 A Scene in a Sushi Bar, AKA the one with a touch of mpreg.

Whew, so that was seven characters in roughly seven days. I'm going to take a week off from that but the week after... I'll either do another seven characters in seven days or perhaps seven posts fleshing out a setting. I might also come back and revise these characters and the setting. But not now.

This next week my big goal is writing more of The Unquiet Past, by Terinu fanfic which has been a long time idle. There won't be public posts of that for a while as I decided to hold off on posting again until it's complete (other than someone who will be getting to see the in progress pieces).

I've had thoughts of writing up a RP setting I'd tinkered with back in the 90s and early 00s which for lack of a better name showing up yet I've called Island Police. Take a dash of old, old memories of Hawaii 5-O (the original show), sprinkle on some anime influences, a bit of the Aria and Ironclaw RPGs. The setting is a cluster of islands covering a decent amount of space. Sadly all my old notes are gone, having either been in my head, on papers lost in moving, or on un-backed up drives. If I start rebuilding it I'll make certain there are backups.

Warnings: Language, one f-bomb dropped;

One week into the Silver City's mission...

Pilot Cadet Fletcher slipped into cargo hold two with his study notes. The others were trying to help but in truth only seemed to be making it harder. Sitting with his back to a storage bin he made it through four pages before noticing the shoe at the far end of the hold. A shoe which, once he walked over proved to be on the foot of a sleeping red headed girl who didn't look old enough to be crew. Quietly he back away and slipped out of the hold and found the nearest comm panel.

"Security, Pilot Cadet Fletcher, I think we have a stowaway in Cargo Two."

Two days later...

"Is she telling the truth Doc? Is she right?"

It was a feeling they all recognized from the war. In a second the marketplace became entirely too quiet for comfort as customers and merchants both began looking for cover. The professor spotted him first.

"Trantin behind us."

There was no mistaking what sort of alien they were dealing with. Long ears, fur, the lopping gait. For every human that had laughed at their resemblance to rabbits there was another who remembered that rabbits had claws for more than decoration.continues under the cut... )

Denise's eyes were locked on the ship ahead of them. Instead of reading the gauges and readouts she felt the way the controls moved under her hands and listened to the sounds...

"Captain, relax!"

"I didn't say anything."

"No, you're just twisting the arms of your seat. It's distracting, let me fly."

He sighed in the seat behind her then let her be. There, the engines were saying they could give her more, she eased the throttles up and watched the hijacked ship slowly come closer.

Johnny Romero, he won awards each year of college in track, received scholarship money for dance, and turned the tide against the Trantin invasion. Not bad for a kid going to the little known Eastern Arizona University. Johnny Romero is one of the founders of the Sky Patrol and is one of five permanent members of the Patrol Council.

Here's a snap poll (in the please leave a comment sort, not the check a ticky-box sort) for anyone seeing this:

I've decided to post a character a day for the next seven days (starting with today). A short character summary, and FATE Accelerated stats (because hey, the FATE system is nifty). I'm thinking it would be fun to have the characters be connected in some way so here's a chance to influence me. What type of setting would you like to see me make characters for? Pulp science fiction? Fantasy? Mission Impossible/Leverage type series? Something completely different?

Even if it's towards the end of the week when you read this, go ahead and comment. I might keep doing this.

Title: Precedent, part two
Fandom/'verse: Unspecified science fiction

Summary: It turns out you can't claim the first episode of Peabody and Sherman as a court precedent, but...

Follow up to Precedent

Precedent, part two

Century old cartoons it turned out don't form precedent in the courtroom. But money, the lawyers money could buy, and politics still came with influence. Six months and five broken television viewership ratings later the former orphan was ruled to now be Chauncey Davis Zwatl.

"But I never liked being Chauncey," the boy in question told the judge, "Can I be Davis Zwatl?"

Judge Henderson considered the odds he'd make it out of the courthouse without being hounded by reporters yet again. He considered the odds they wouldn't bother coming to a name change hearing. The boy's new mother gave a thumbs up and started nodding when he turned to ask her approval.

"Very well, so ordered. My clerk will update the paperwork before I sign it. Agni Zwatl, congratulations, you are now a mother in the eyes of the law. Young Davis, I wish you the best with your new family. Both of you, please try to avoid finding yourself in my courtroom again."

The new mother and son had almost made to the exit when Judge Henderson heard an unhappy, "School uniforms! Do I really hafta?"

Judge Henderson started working out how many days his vacation hours would last.

Ice Cream, or Tonya on the Run

There are times you wonder what the hell you think you're doing. With the police officer I'd just shocked clutching his arm and swearing behind me, and more back at their cars, and a super-villain with hostages in the bank right in front of me... I was well past the What Am I Thinking stage and right into the Did Five Years as PsyMinder's Brainwashed Toy Leave Me With a Death Wish stage.

I'm going to blame [livejournal.com profile] jeriendhal for the seed of a thought that lead to this opening...

Mika had worried when her mom's boss said he'd handle parent-teacher night. She could picture the fury on her mom's face if any of the things she feared would be mentioned came to her through him. But the way everyone made room as he entered made it hard to worry about any of them. The crowd of parents, teachers, and kids parted before him with hushed whispers of, "The Dragon!"

Before they were halfway through the room the vice-principal was trying to lead her away with a hand on her shoulder, "Now Mika, don't be bothering him I'm sure he's busy."

"No." That was all it took to make him stop mid-step. The school's most feared disciplinarian actually shaking.

"Sir! If she's given you any trouble."

"Then I will inform her mother when she returns. For now she is with me."
